Book launch and discussion: Advanced Introduction to Legal Positivism

Sofy will organise a round table discussion upon a new book by professor emeritus Kaarlo Tuori, Advanced Introduction to Legal Positivism, and his 2021 book Properties of Law, October 22 2025 from 2 PM to 5 PM.  Aside from the author himself, discussing the book will be a distinguished cast of Sakari Hänninen, Juha Karhu, Martti Koskenniemi, Visa Kurki, and Eerik Lagerspetz. The event will be held in Porthania lecture room 545, University of Helsinki, but it will also be possible to participate remotely via link that will be published later along with the exact programme. Sofyn vuosikokous ja Eerik Lagerspetzin esitelmä 14.3.2024

Sofy ry:n vuosikokous vuonna 2024 pidetään to 14.3.2024 klo 16.00.

Paikka: Helsingin yliopisto, oikeustieteellisen tdk:n tiedekuntahuone P545 (Tiedekuntahuone), 5. kerros, Porthania (Yliopistonkatu 3, Helsinki).

Kokouksen jälkeen professori Eerik Lagerspetz pitää vuosikokousesitelmän otsikolla ”Luovuttamaton vapaus”. Lagerspetzin esitelmä alkaa klo 17.00, tai vuosikokouksen pitkittyessä välittömästi kokouksen päätyttyä.

5. kerroksen lasiovet saattavat olla lukossa. Suosittelemme saapumaan viimeistään 15.55 (tai 16:55 jos tulette vain kuulemaan esitelmän), jotta ehdimme hakemaan osallistujat ovelta.

Sofy ry:n opiskelija-ja mentoripalkinnot 2023

Suomen oikeusfilosofinen yhdistys Sofy ry etsii parasta oikeusfilosofista opinnäytetyötä opiskelijalta, joka valmistui tai valmistuu maisteriksi vuonna 2023. Opinnäyte voi olla varhaisemmaltakin ajalta koska määräävää on opiskelijan valmistumisvuosi. Oikeusfilosofia on tässä ymmärrettävä laajasti, yhdistyksen monitieteisen luonteen mukaisesti. Keskeistä on opinnäytteen aihe eikä opiskelijan pääaine. Ehdotuksen palkinnonsaajaksi esittelee Sofyn hallitukselle palkintolautakunta, johon tänä vuonna kuuluvat Iiris Tuomela ja Harri Karpén.

Palkintolautakunta pyytää ilmoittamaan palkintoehdotuksia 1.2.2024 mennessä osoitteeseen info@sofy.fi. Ehdotukseen on hyvä liittää itse tutkielma (tai linkki siihen), tieto sen arvosanasta sekä arvostelulausunto, mikäli mahdollista.

You are welcome to join the Biodiversity and Animal Law Symposium on the 9th of October 2023. The event is free, in hybrid format, and open to all.

Co-organized by the Research Group on Rights of Nature and Animals and the Helsinki Animal Law Centre, this symposium will have experts in the fields of both biodiversity and animal law present and discuss the most important themes in these fields, with a keynote by Professor Afshin Akhtar-Khavari. The format is adapted to inspire lively discussions: with the speakers commenting on each other’s presentations, and more than enough time for Q&A (please see the programme attached).

POSTPONED: Spanish-Finnish Seminar in Legal Theory 2020

.This event has been postponed to 2022. The new dates will be announced in November 2021 by the latest.

The Law School of the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and the Finnish Association for the Philosophy of Law (SOFY) in cooperation with the Faculty of Law of the University of Alicante arranges the VIII Spanish-Finnish seminar in legal theory as an international conference in Finland, in Helsinki, in the House of Sciences on 2nd – 4th September, 2020.

The theme of the seminar is “Fact and Value in Law”. The focused questions are: what is the role and significance of facts and values in the domain of legal knowledge and should legal knowledge be treated as descriptions of facts, understanding of values or something else? These topics have been central for many distinguished scholars in the history of legal theory, like Alf Ross. The seminar will contain a tribute section about Ross.  

All professors, scholars, researchers, lecturers and students interested in legal theory and legal philosophy are welcome to the seminar. They are welcome to register themselves as participants in the seminar and/or to propose a paper for a seminar lecture. The seminar is free of charge, and the conference language of the seminar is English.

Instructions for the abstract

A participant of the seminar can propose a paper and a lecture by sending an abstract of the paper to the organizers until to 19th June, 2020. An abstract and a paper can have one or several authors. Accordingly, a lecture can be given by one or several persons.  Please, write and send an abstract as a PDF-document with no more than 500 words. You can submit your abstract by filling out the following form: https://elomake.uef.fi/lomakkeet/24977/lomake.html

The authors of the accepted papers will be notified by email by 29th June, 2020. The authors of the accepted papers are requested to send the final papers to the organizers by 21st August, 2020. Please, send a paper with no more than 10.000 words.

The Finnish Society for Legal Philosophy (Sofy ry) will organize a book launch seminar on Visa Kurki’s new book A Theory of Legal Personhood (Oxford University Press 2019). All are warmly welcome to the seminar.

The programme will consist of a presentation by Visa Kurki, and three comments by:

Juha Karhu (University of Lapland): ”The extensional beliefs regarding legal personhood, history, and justice – challenging the methods used in Visa Kurki’s A Theory of Legal Personhood”
Raimo Siltala (University of Turku) : “Earth, Wind and Fire, and other Dilemmas of Legal Personhood”
Maija Aalto-Heinilä (University of Eastern Finland): ”Some thoughts about nonhuman animals”

Wine and nibbles will be served after the talks.

Who, or what, is a ’person’ according to the law? How did this understanding of personhood come about? In the twenty-first century, environmentalism, animal rights, artificial intelligence, and corporate personhood have compelled us to consider these questions once again. Legal personhood is a foundational concept of Western legal thought and A Theory of Legal Personhood seeks to go beyond contemporary debates, challenging our very understanding of legal personhood itself.
